Murphy beds have become increasingly popular during the last couple of decades, and in case you wonder whether they are comfortable to sleep in we have made this article about the mattress in a Murphy bed.

How thick can the mattress be?
Most Murphy beds you find in furniture stores will fit a spring mattress of 11″, meaning that the bed will be just as comfortable as an ordinary bed. That means that you can use a mattress you already have, or you can buy a really comfortable mattress to use with your new bed.

That being said you might consider saving some space here if you are comfortable sleeping on a hard mattress.
If you like to sleep on a hard mattress (like me) you can choose a mattress that is thinner, and choose a more sleek design for your Murphy bed, that will take up less space against the wall.

How important is the “space saving” element to you?
If you are looking for a Murphy bed for a tiny house or small apartment, and want to get the most out of your room – you might consider getting a custom-made Murphy bed, with a thin mattress, in order to save some space.
It is possible to build a Murphy bed that’s only 5-10″ deep. It can also be done with our guide to building an “Ikea Murphy bed“. Our mattress is only 4” thick, as we like our mattress hard, so our bed system doesn’t take up much space in the room. We flip it up every day, as the room is also used for several other purposes than sleeping: Working, sewing, eating, playing music etc.
Thin mattress = slim design
We have chosen a thin mattress to make the Murphy bed system as slim as possible. Besides the actual bed, we have storage on the right and the closet on the left (that yet has been painted white) contains all of our clothes.
What if I really want a thick mattress?
If you enjoy sleeping on a thick and soft spring mattress with a nice top mattress, you should totally go for that. As mentioned above most Murphy beds can fit an 11″ mattress, and you can easily get the same comfort level from a Murphy bed as you get with an ordinary bed.
That means that there is not really any difference between the thickness of a mattress for a Murphy bed and a mattress for a normal bed.
But be sure to check with the store before you buy, to make sure the bed can fit a thick mattress if that’s what you want 🙂
